Compilation CD series
Los Nº1 de 40 Principales (40 Principales Number Ones)
Since 2002, 40 Principales has been releasing an annual compilation CD under the 40 Principales brand label.
This product brings together the most memorable songs and biggest performers of the year on a double CD and sometimes, as in 2004 and 2006, comes complete with bonus DVD material such as music videos.
The compilation CD is released every December in time for Christmas and is consistently one of the year’s best sellers.
It’s a huge hit with the public, bringing together, as it does, in one boxed set, all the year’s greatest hits. It’s also a crucial weapon in the fight against pirate downloads thanks to the added features such as audiovisual material and because greatest-hit style releases are most popular among consumers who are less inclined to buy music.
The compilation CDs are not only best sellers but they also contribute to brand awareness.
  • They provide valuable content feedback.
  • They boost brand awareness in other consumer environments and listening platforms.
  • They provide a highly visible market presence, since they sell hundreds of thousands of copies. Indeed, since launching in 2002, they’ve consistently gone platinum.
  • They provide an annual public event.
Performers and bands featured on the compilation CDs over the years have included big names from the national and international music scene, including: Las Niñas, Fran Perea, David DeMaría, Bebe, Hombres G, La Oreja de Van Gogh, Shakira, Antonio Orozco, Fangoria, Estopa, Keane and Eros Ramazotti.
40 Principales has partnered with record labels MUXXIC, BMG and Universal for the successful release and distribution of this product.
The definitive history of Spanish pop.
An example of a successful joint venture between a content provider and the optimum distribution channel, this collection of CDs highlighted the advantages of coordinating a project across a number of companies within the Group.
Prisa Radio supplied the necessary content for a series of collectible CDs and books. Newspaper El País was responsible for selling the product along with the paper, ensuring the huge success of the joint venture.
Th initiative was launched to coincide with the 40th anniversary of 40 Principales, the idea being to offer a high-quality product with exclusive material aimed at all types of music lovers. The product profile coincided with that of the newspaper’s readership.
Work on the project involved:
  • Documenting the material: sourcing images and texts published throughout the group’s print media from the 1960s onwards. Sources included the publications El Gran Musical, Revista 40, El País…
  • Rights management: contacting record labels and rights managers for the audiovisual material, as well as securing rights to publish images and photographs.
  • Design: development of a fresh design that would integrate images and text.
The result was 25 volumes in book-format, each with 60 pages of commentary, images and detailed background information on each seminal musical moment, and a CD with performers and bands from the different decades, such as El Canto del Loco, Los Brincos and Miguel Bosé.
